My Best Local Films for 2013



A total of 100 local films I have seen and make a review this year from different independent film festivals, regular mainstream film screening and special screenings. And now I will present my best local films for 2013.

10. Bukas Na Lang Sapagkat Gabi Na


Four interconnected stories during the height of the Martial Law crackdown against rebels. The palpable aura of fear leaves Filipinos in a state of paralysis, unable or unwilling to move until the dark cloud of history passes over.




9. Norte, Hangganan ng Kasaysayan


Norte Hangganan ng Kasaysayan tells the story of a man who is wrongly jailed for murder while the real killer roams free. The murderer is an intellectual frustrated with his country's never-ending cycle of betrayal and apathy. The convict is a simple man who finds life in prison more tolerable when something mysterious and strange starts happening to him. 
 


8. Sana Dati



A love story about a woman whose wedding is thrown into disarray when a mysterious person arrives and reminds her of the man she really loves.



7. Kabisera



Andres discovers what he is capable of an how much he is willing to risk for the people he loves. One man's transformation from a naive, innocent man to a ruthless father, friend and eventually, a drug dealer.



6. Purok 7

Purok 7 is a countryside dramedy (drama-comedy) that follows 14-year-old Diana and her younger brother who live by themselves after their mother went abroad and their father lived with another woman.



5. Otso

An ambidextrous, aging author calls on his Muse to get rid of his writer’s block. Otso shows how a screenwriter’s search for inspiration for his next big project leads him to a journey of self discovery.


4. Ekstra

Ekstra (The Bit Player) is a socio-realist drama-comedy film, which follows a seemingly usual day in the life of Loida Malabanan (Vilma Santos-Recto) as she embarks on yet another shooting day of a soap opera as an extra. As the shoot goes on, we get a glimpse of the truth in the ruling system of the production as well as the exploitation on the marginalized laborers like her.



3. Transit

The film depicts the inter-connected lives of OFWs who struggle to prevent their children from being deported to the Philippines.

2. Badil

Badil examines the corrupted systems of elections that occur in a small rural town. On the eve of election day, the son of an ailing party leader witnesses the corruption of the voting system in their barrio.



1. OTJ (On The Job)

OTJ set to open your eyes to the real 'action' on the streets of Manila. The story mainly revolves around four men who are all in search for truth and personal justice--the law enforcers Francis (Piolo) and Joaquin (Joey), and law breakers Daniel (Gerald) and Tatang (Joel).

The journey of a man who has lived his life by the law and for the law. But, he is also a man betrayed by the law. An embattled senator becomes a fugitive as he gets caught up in a series of political controversies.

A group of young people disregard superstition and find themselves haunted by a malicious spirit following a visit to a wake.

Some time after their long distance relationship fails, two former lovers reunite at work and deal with being near again yet again.

1.   Boy Golden: Shoot To Kill

From the shadows of gangland Manila rises a familiar gangster; thought as dead by many but now back and thirsty for revenge. Arturo Porcuna, now known as “Boy Golden”, treads back to the streets of gangsters to seek revenge against an old adversary.
