Movie Review: How to Disappear Completely

A young girl from the countryside dreams of disappearing. She plays a lonely game of hide-and-seek while her mother quotes the Bible and her father relishes in alcohol and history. She decides to put on a stage play based on an old Filipino film about a family who disappears in the mountains during the war. But soon after the performance, she vanishes from the car, prompting her parents to look for her in the woods. One by one, they all start to disappear.

Deconstruct the supernatural thriller by slowing down every moment to the point of pure abstraction. The synthesizer score, insane directionality, sublime visuals and horrifically symbolic ending make this something of a marvel.

The only local films in competition that I catch in Cinemanila (aside from Bukas Na Lang Sapagkat Gabi Na that I watched already in Cinema One Originals 2014) due to hectic schedule as I have limited time to catch all of the entries as Cinemanila overlaped with the ongoing MMFF New Wave.
This film needs a deeper analyzation before you wil fully understand the core and the message of the film. Its not only about the disappearing of the children literally as we see in the trailer but it is something to do with our innerselves. On how we project ourselves to the world. That if we don't take care of our selves spiritually and emotionally the result will be a unexpected outburst of our self. The film also convey the importance of family as the foundation of building our character as human being. You will not see the message literally in the film. You need to understand and reflect on all the dialogue and events in the film. This is something new to me as an audience for its many layers that I need to dig in for me to wholly embrace the film.

My Verdict: 3.5/5
