Movie Reivew: Norte, Hangganan ng Kasaysayan (Philippines)

Norte Hangganan ng Kasaysayan tells the story of a man who is wrongly jailed for murder while the real killer roams free. The murderer is an intellectual frustrated with his country's never-ending cycle of betrayal and apathy. The convict is a simple man who finds life in prison more tolerable when something mysterious and strange starts happening to him.

The much anticipated 4 hour closing film of Cinemanila from the acclaimed director Lav Diaz. The film got more attention as this was featured in this year's Un Certain Regard Section of Cannes InternationalFilm Festival 2014. This is is my first time to watch a Lav Diaz Film. All I know for this film maker is his long take and several hours film so in my younger age I felt that it was so odd and very boring to watch this kind of film plus the fact that I am not that interest as well with theme that Lav Diaz tackled in a film. But I give myself a chance this time to know what the buzz is all about watching a Lav Diaz Film and why it was selected in Cannes Film Fest this year.

So justified naman yung mahabang pelikula dahil binuild up muna yung pagkatao ng main character bago dumating sa conflict ng movie then towards the end inilaborate din kung paano na resolve yung conflict at what happen to the characters literally. Yes theres a lot of long take but its needed in some of the scenes to build up the emotion of that particular scene. Theres a lot of silent moment na naramdaman ko at tumawid sa akin ang emosyon na gustong iparating especially with Angeli Bayani's character. The most powerful scene for me is the scene wherin the family of Archie is in the cliff and attempting to end their life. What I most like especially about the film is the feel and the look of the movie because I am really feel connected to the environment at napadama sa akin kung ano ang buhay doon. So good job for the DOP and PD of the film. Screenplay of the film is also commendable because all of the scenes are relevant, alam mo na pinag isipan and I didn't feel bored watching the whole film.

For the acting performance, as expected all of the artists delivered and maybe given an ensemble acting award. Seems that Angeli Bayani is lucky this year as two of her film which she is lead character were featured in different international film festival. Overall the film perfectly captures the story that is want to be delivered to the audience. One of the film that has good story to tell that we should watch this year.

 My Verdict: 4/5
