Movie Review: Shake, Rattle and Roll XV

A snake creature secretly lurks inside a shopping mall. A family is fed a meal that turns them into monsters. An airplane hijacking is interrupted by the birth of a tiyanak.

I can say that this franchise of Shake, Rattle and Roll XV is a combination of entertaining and real goose bump factor capable of being funny, strange, and scary frequently all at the same time. It is a balanced and brilliant scare fest from 3 filmmakers. Here are my individual review and rating for each episode:

Ahas

A decent drama -horror flick that works precisely due to its polished visual effects, effective and top notch acting prowess from Erich Gonzales and mind buggling urban legend story that keeps me wonder through the years. Melai Cantiveros is hilariously funny in this episode.

My Verdict: 3/5

Ulam

An intelligent horror film that invests in a constant tension instead of resorting to scares and deserves credit for the amazing way that it fuses (and confuses) the reality with the imagination through wonderful transitions. For a horror movie, it's surprisingly lean on the scares. It's more interested in playing tricks with perception and bending reality. There's a sustained mood of eerie anticipation, and the committed lead actor Dennis Trillo and lead actress Carla Abellana sell it. The eerie atmosphere of psychological upset is intriguing and unusual. An intense devastating experience that relies heavily on character-building and scary imagery. The goose bumps are undeniable, you may as well just give in. Jerold Tarog fully achieve his goals trying something different in horror genre. Looking forward for his full feature straight horror film next year. I can say that Ulam episode is the best horror film that I've seen this year!

My Verdict: 5/5

Flight 666

Flight 666 shows promise in its premise, promising a remarkable and effective airplane disaster film. The film isn't perfect but it  doesn't need to be as it will give you total entertaining roller coaster of gripping events inside the plane. This episode is a good breather as you come out the theater smiling. It offers campy and circusy horror-comedy genre exploited for the most fun possible and settles for complacency.

My Verdict: 3/5
