Hopeless
romantic Janzen Torres finds another chance at love when she matches
with the handsome and seemingly perfect Theo Balmaceda on a dating app.
Unfortunately, on the day of their meet-up, Theo ghosts her, leading
Janzen into an intricate web of deceit, lies, and catfishing led by
sociopathic mastermind Beanie Landridos.
Marupok AF tackles the harsh realities of catfishing. It gives us a glimpse on the world of betrayal and lies in playing someone else's emotion. The theme is dark but they were able to pull off to make the treatment of the film light but still the rawness of the emotion of the character is still there. Maris Racal gave a fine performance showing that she can deliver an antagonist role. She delivers it with flying colors and even though she is evil in this film, you kinda make it want to root for her. EJ Jallorina on the other hand as the protagonist makes you really feel the victim of being betrayed. She is good and you can see it in her eyes the pain that she's been through in the film. Royce Cabrera is also effective in his role as a funny and innocent bit player playing an accomplice to the catfishing. I just found some lack in the motive and grounds of Maris' character on doing that level of catfishing to EJ, is it really just her trip or just random things that she would like to do. I enjoy the satire of the film in the world of filmmaking and the social commentary of working behind the camera and I think that is one of the strengths of the film. It also subtly shows the
challenges of LGBTQIA+ in our society.
Overall, this film gave you a decent laugh and at the same time gives you a thought to ponder on the realities of life.
My Verdict: 4/5
