Movie Review: As If It's True

Gemma Stone is a social media influencer/content creator who’s burning out from trying to maintain the interest of her followers. She meets James, a struggling musician suffering from depression. They enter into a relationship with the mutual intent to capitalize on the other. Gemma uses James for content by presenting him as a perfect aspirational romantic partner, while James leeches off Gemma’s wealth and connections to further his own music career. But, as time passes, their intentions don’t pan out as they expect and a blur forms between real love and exploitation.

As If It's True is a modern love story that tackles the story of the two individuals in their social dilemma and accepting of oneself in the world of social media. The story of very now and for sure the GenZ and millennials can truly relate on this film. The film is anchored by the good performance of the leads, Khalil Ramos and Ashley Ortega. They gave their all of their emotions and fully embraced their characters well. Khalil Ramos as a hopeless romantic is a boyfriend that you would like to have and you will root for his character in this film. Ashley Ortega, on the other hand, plays an upbeat role that she nailed well and gave layers to the story of the film. The two complement each other and work well together. The supporting performances from Adrianna So and Jan Silverio are also noteworthy, giving spice to the interesting premise of the film. The soundtrack, production design and cinematography of the film is also good and is well sync and suitable to the mood and aesthetics of the film. So if you want to watch a decent updated romance drama for GenZ, As If It''s True is a good catch.

My Verdict: 3.5/5
