Eric lives a rather normal life working as an animator in the
Philippines He has a nice but dirty apartment, a good paying job, and a
guy he likes. One thing glaring about Eric though is he does not have a
mouth, literally. One day, he receives a call from his mother Rosalinda,
asking him to check up on his seemingly lost uncle. Only to find out
that his uncle has been dead for days. While still in shock, a familiar
alien arrives wanting to take Eric away from Earth. Iti Mapukpukaw is
Filipino-Ilocano rotoscope animated film that follows Eric’s life as it
twists and turns after the arrival of the familiar alien, and the death
of his uncle; both of which triggers Eric to remember his past and
untangle his memories.
Iti Mapukpukaw is an affecting animated film that
will truly capture your heart. It got a dark story to tell but with its
creative screenplay and storytelling, it shows us a compelling
narrative that keeps audience engaged and invested in the story. A well
written film that has a lot of layers to tell and creatively showcase in
the film.
An emotionally driven film
with a great story that leans on a parents love and understanding.
Furthermore, the performances of the three cast are nothing short of
outstanding. The actors bring a level of authenticity and depth to their
roles that is truly commendable. Carlo Aquino's performance is such a
gem, he do not have a lines but the emotions are overflowing. Dolly De
Leon is so natural and charming on this film, she had its own moment
that you will definitely feel the love of a mother to her son. Gio Gahol
is such a trooper in this film that works and blends well with Carlo
and Dolly. Another thing that is amazing in this film is the animation,
it shows that the quality of animation in the Philippines film making is
at the same level with its international contemporary, so kudos to the
team for this.
From the vibrant animation to the impressive performances to the diverse
and heartfelt story, Iti Mapukpukaw
manages
to be a good Filipino film to watch and we can be proud of.
Iti Mapukpukaw is so so good in many aspects and a must watch in Cinemalaya 2023.
My Verdict: 5/5
