Movie Review: Bulawan Nga Usa

After his beloved grandfather’s death, Makoy embarks on a soul-stirring expedition to a mystical mountain in search of the legendary golden deer that possesses the power to grant wishes. His journey takes an unexpected turn when he befriends a spirited young mountain boy who joins him in the quest for the mythical creature and self-discovery.

A beautiful simple story that will somehow touch your heart. It has a good mix of folklore story and provincial narrative at the same time. You will appreciate the beauty and  people of the province while watching this. It is good that we have  a regional film representation as a full length category in Cinemalaya 2023 for the audience to appreciate more and see the perspective of regional storytelling in Philippines filmmaking. I love the location of the film as it lets the audience feel like going there and shows us the beautiful scenic spot of mountains in Iloilo. The cast are good from the lead Ron Matthews Espinosa up to the kids that just jive into their characters. The original soundtrack of the film is commendable, giving the cultural and provincial aesthetics and texture of the film.  Overall Bulawan is a light, child friendly and warm tale about self-discovery that will make you feel good after watching.

My Verdict: 3/5
