Maria is a common given name to a Filipina. In 2016, Duterte’s drug war
left 26,000 to 30,000 families, fatherless or husbandless. The wives and
mothers of the killed victims are left trying to meet both ends for
their families. The documentary follows three women named Maria after
the bloodbath of Duterte’s drug war. A staunch supporter turned victim, a
wife & mother fighting for their rights, and a woman who became
a beacon of hope.
Maria is a powerful documentary that is indeed chilling and sometimes hard to watch. It
works with its intention to document the realities and effects of
Extrajudicial killings in the Philippines. It effectively captures the
story of the victim and closely follows the slice of a life of what it
takes to be a victim of injustice. The documentary weaves the political
climate in the Philippines and at the same time the adverse effects of
what is really happening in a violent war on drugs.
Maria has a lot of layers of message to tell that it's up to the
audience on how to interpret. What makes this documentary on EJK
different from others is it shows us the testament and emotion of
women's collective experience on the unfairness of this war on drugs.
Through the combination of interviews, archival footage, and news clips,
this documentary presents a relevant narrative with important messages
to tell to the audience.
My Verdict: 4/5
