In every movie that he watches, 16-year-old Andoy creates narratives
that could help him find answers to the questions that have always
bothered him: Who is he and who is his father? While the truth remains
elusive, his imaginings remain unrealized until two movie-like
characters appear in their barrio – Ariel, a hairdresser who lures young
men with his inexplicable charm, and Isidro, a mysterious, long-haired
man who owns a VCD player. Andoy finds himself entranced with Ariel and
Isidro and begins to spend intimate time with them. As he gets entangled
with their twisted lives, his reality becomes mystified. Just like the
movies, Andoy must decide whether to conclude his years-long search for
his father with a bang or with a whimper.
A slow burn film of self exploration and coming out that takes us to the glimpse of life in a province in early 2000's. Characters and viewers are taken on a journey that both fascinates and unsettles. This
movie heavily relies on the viewer being able to understand deeper
messages and the intent behind the many symbolisms, metaphors and vague
hints. It has a promising cast that acts and dwells into the character
well. Shun Mark Gomez is a promising actor to watch out for while Bon
Andrew Lentejas shines with his confidence towards his character.
Another pivotal character that marks in the film are Cedrick Juan and
Serena Magiliw that just embrace and embody their character well
naturally. The visuals and production design are commendable, bringing
in the vibes of living in the province and taking us to the time of the
early 2000's. Huling Palabas is a
beautiful film that makes you engage and follow the characters
while watching. The mystery of the film is its strength that will make
you interested and hooked as the story unfolds.
My Verdict: 4/5
