THE latest installment in the popular “Doraemon” franchise hits cinemas this week after receiving a G rating from the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB).
Children and anime otakus will surely enjoy “Doraemon The Movie: New Nobita and the Castle of the Undersea Devil,” which has a run time of one hour, 41 minutes and 27 seconds and will be shown exclusively in SM Cinemas.
It is the 45th “Doraemon” feature film and features the voice of Mizuta Wasabi as the iconic title character and Ohara Megumi as Nobita.
The MTRCB described it as an adventure story that teaches children about the undersea world and its creatures, and educates them to be environment-friendly and compassionate towards others.
“The film promotes positive values and is appropriate for audiences of all ages,” the Agency said in giving it a rating of G, which means that it is suited for the general audience.
The MTRCB also gave R-13 ratings to three other exciting movies that are now showing in theaters.
The epic fantasy action movie, “The Odyssey,” got an R-13 rating for its “infrequent and non-graphic depiction of violence and suffering, mature themes” that may not be suitable for viewers below 13 years old.
Starring Matt Damon as the Greek hero Odysseus and Anne Hathaway as his wife Penelope, the film is adapted from Homer’s classic epic and chronicles Odysseus’ long journey home after the Trojan War.
It runs for two hours, 52 minutes and 24 seconds and has an ensemble cast that includes Tom Holland, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya and Charlize Theron, among others.
Also given an R-13 rating is the South Korean feature film, “The Second Child,” starring Lim Soo-jung, Park So-yi and Yuna.
The horror-mystery flick, which runs for one hour, 44 minutes and 40 seconds, has “mature themes concerning depression and suicide” and has “infrequent depictions of horror and frightening scenes” that were deemed unsuitable for children below 13 years old.
Meanwhile, the sci-fi action thriller, “Superhuman,” starring Christopher Mark, has an R-13 rating. It has a run time of one hour, 17 minutes and 25 seconds, with exciting martial arts scenes that is sure to keep moviegoers on the edge of their seats.
It is shown exclusively in Megaworld Cinemas.
In classifying it as an R-13 movie, the MTRCB said its “infrequent and non-graphic depiction of violence and suffering, prolonged violent fight sequences, mature themes of mind alterations” may not be suitable for children younger than 13 years of age.
A rating of G or General Audience means that a film is suitable for all ages, while a PG rating or Parental Guidance means that a parent or guardian should be present to help guide and supervise younger viewers.
An R-13 rating means that a film is suitable for moviegoers aged 13 and up, while R-16 movies are meant for audiences aged 16 or older. A movie with an R-18 rating is for adult audiences only.
MTRCB Chair and CEO Lala Sotto urged parents and guardians to be guided by the Board’s classification ratings for this week’s upcoming movies.
“Bagama’t karamihan sa mga pelikula natin ngayong linggo ay angkop sa mga batang manonood, pinapaalalahan pa rin namin ang mga magulang na gabayan silang maigi sa panonood ayon sa kanilang edad at pang-unawa,” Sotto said.
“Nais namin na may matutunan ang ating mga anak sa mga mapapanood nila sa mga teatro - hindi lamang sa kultura, kundi pati sa pagpapahalaga at tamang-asal,” she added.
