Movie Review: Gitling

Jamie just called off her engagement from the one person who was supposed to. Makoto ran away to the Philippines to escape the wife who cheated on him two years ago. Their paths cross in Bacolod where they work together and create Ilonggo subtitles for Makoto’s film. Together, as they go through the filmmaking process, they find solace in a friendship they never knew they needed.

Gitling is the dark horse and a surprise for me in Cinemalaya 2023. I didn’t expect that I would feel in love and deeply affected by the story of the film after watching. It is not just a love story but also a detailed character study of one’s exploration of finding love and knowing his or her self at the same time. Less is more in this film, at first you didn’t realize that you are watching a love story but as the film unfolds you will root for the two leads to be together. The cinematography is outstanding and feels like a moving painting. The feels and texture of the film are easily transcended to the audience as you feel the coldness and sorrow of the two leads. Gabby Padilla shines in her subtle performance while Ken Yamamura shines with his rawness and authenticity. The film has a lot of silent moments but it tells a lot of things. The integration of the film's location, food and culture are smoothly weaved to the flow of the story. The movie transcends its form and talks to you and its simple approach allows its powerful story to take centre stage. Gitling is definitely a must watch in Cinemalaya 2023.

My Verdict: 4.5/5
