Movie Review: Tabon

A man's belief in reality is tested when suspects are accused of a crime they say they did not commit.   The death of Amang Zaldy propels his only son Ian to journey back to his hometown with his wife Erika and step daughter Joy and discover the mystery that lurks behind his father's murder. With the help of the senior inspector, Ian is introduced to three suspects that claim different versions of truths.  Each vantage point leads to various revelations solving questions and uncertainties about his childhood.

Tabon is a decent attempt to create an atmospheric Pinoy cult film. The film succeeds in a way in creating  an ominous atmosphere with dull cinematography and controlled musical scoring. The cast Lao Rodriguez, Benjie Felipe, Leon Miguel shine in this film in portraying weird, dark and challenging characters. Even the veteran character actors are worth seeing in this film, Richard Manabat, Dexter Doria and Menggie Cobarrubias. In fairness to Tabon, it has a sense of curiosity and uncertainty while watching this film as it presents many questions that audience will want answered as the film goes along. There could be something interesting here and needs improvement in execution  but I will give Xian Lim a credit as a first time filmmaker for pulling up and giving a different kind of genre in Cinemalaya.

My Verdict:  3/5
