Movie Review: Ang Hupa

The film is set in the year 2034 AD.  Southeast Asia has been in the dark for the last three years, literally, because the sun hasn’t shone as a result of massive volcanic eruptions at the Celebes Sea in 2031.  Madmen control countries, communities, enclaves and bubble cities.  Cataclysmic epidemics razed over the continent.  Millions have died and millions have left.

Ang Hupa is another no holds barred socio political film by Lav Diaz about dictatorship and the death of truth. Joel Lamangan is such an amazing actor in this film! I love how the film envision the future of the Philippines  that was so cleverly and uniquely done. From using drones as enforced spy weapon, the mysterious killer rain, national id, memory removal up to upgraded system in prostitution . Overall brilliantly done with fine cut edit and strong message, I can say that this is one of the good films of 2019.

My Verdict: 4.5/5
