The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) has issued its classifications for seven movies and the screening of a Filipino boy band’s concert that will hit theaters this week.
The Agency’s ratings for these releases range from Parental Guidance (PG) to R-16, which means that there is something for everyone, MTRCB Chair and CEO Lala Sotto said.
“Gaya ng aming laging paalala, i-check muna ang ratings kung pasok ito sa edad at antas ng pang-unawa ng ating mga anak. Gusto natin na mag-enjoy ang mga pamilya, pero dapat may Responsableng Panonood lagi,” Sotto said.
Three feature presentations got PG ratings from the MTRCB. “Detective Conan: Episode Zero” of the popular anime franchise received a PG rating. It features the voices of Minami Takayama and Wakana Yamazaki and will be exclusively shown in SM Cinemas.
Although a detective/mystery adventure anime, its “murder, blood, threatening criminal activity, and poisoning sequence warrant Parental Guidance for younger viewers.”
The 1988 animated film “The Land Before Time” similarly got a PG rating. Its cast includes Pat Hingle, Gabriel Damon and Helen Shaver.
The movie has “minimal and non-graphic depiction of animal violence and abandonment, natural disaster sufferings, predator-and-prey scary images that may be emotionally distressing for young audiences” that may need parental supervision and guidance.
The “SB19 Wakas at Simula: The Trilogy Concert Finale” was also classified as PG. It will be exclusively screened in SM Cinemas.
Meanwhile, a Filipino-produced film, “Mantsa,” was rated R-13 for its themes of mental health, trauma, depression, guilt and mental anxiety. It stars Pilar Pilapil, Shira Tweg, Gelli de Belen and Khai Flores, among others.
“Its theme is unsettling and a psychological thriller. It is given an R-13 rating strictly for 13 years and up for mature themes and violent scenes,” the MTRCB said.
“The Social Reckoning,” a drama starring Mikey Madison, was rated R-13. It deals with whistleblowing, corporate responsibility, social-media influence, misinformation, and the possible consequences of technology on society. The film will be exclusively screened in Megaworld Cinemas.
Another R-13 rated film is the Japanese horror movie “Hyoketsu: The Curse of the White Lady” starring Hiromitsu Kitayama.
“The film deals with family relationships, grief, fear, isolation, domestic conflict, and supernatural beliefs. It also explores how fear and suspicion can affect a family,” the MTRCB said.
The action sci-fi flick “Killing Machine” starring Dave Mantel was rated R-13 for its “mature science-fiction and dystopian themes involving a deadly pandemic, corporate oppression, armed rebellion, illegal medical experimentation on a child, and a dangerous biological mutation.”
The supernatural horror movie “Other Mommy” featuring Jessica Chastain received an R-16 rating.
The Agency noted its “graphic but non-gratuitous depiction of horror, psychological distress, frightening scenes and gore caused by the evil entity as a result of fractured family dynamics” that may be unsuitable for viewers below 16 years old.
“The experimental medical technology and its consequences present ethical dilemmas that viewers might find thought-provoking but potentially disturbing. The film also touches on themes of depression and suicidal thoughts, which require mature understanding,” the Agency said.
A G or General Audience rating means a film is suitable for all ages, while PG or Parental Guidance means a parent or guardian must be present to supervise younger viewers.
An R-13 means a film is suitable for
viewers aged 13 and up, while an R-16 is for 16 years old and above. An R-18 is
for adult audiences only.
