Movie Review: Edward

A public hospital serves as a witness to a young boy’s rite of passage when he is stuck to take care of his ailing father. Edward is stuck in a public hospital where he cares for his ailing father. Estranged from his father Mario and his half- brother Renato, Edward makes the hospital ward his own playground, unmindful of the hopelessness that surrounds him. His careless attitude changes when he meets and becomes enamored with Agnes, a young patient in the hospital. Finding refuge and comfort in each other, Edward and Agnes bond and connect.

Edward was  well made coming of age film anchored with its brilliant screenplay, touching story and finest performance by its ensemble cast. The phasing, storytelling, editing, dialogue and location of the film are perfectly put in place to deliver a charming and realistic story. It is a good balance to entertain you and give us the glimpse of the realities of public hospital in the Philippines. A new young breed actor is born with Louise Abuel that perfectly embodies and capture the innocence and sensibility of his character. Ella Cruz also delivers her best performance to date on this film. The supporting cast are also commendable from Elijah Canlas, Manuel Chua and Dido Dela Paz adding color to the film. There are  memorable scenes in the film that was simply shot yet will pinch your heart and made you cry at the same time. A strong contender for Best Picture in Cinemalaya 2019 and definitely must watch.

My Verdict: 5/5
