From the hearts and minds of Stephen King and director Mike Flanagan, “The Life of Chuck” tells the extraordinary story of an ordinary man. This unforgettable, genre-bending tale celebrates the life of Charles “Chuck” Krantz (Hiddleston) as he experiences the wonder of love, the heartbreak of loss, and the multitudes contained in all of us.

“Life of Chuck” is a departure from what both King and Flanagan are known for. But while Flanagan made his name in the industry because of horror hits such as “Oculus,” “Doctor Sleep” and “The Haunting of Hill House,” King – dubbed the “King of Horror” thanks to genre classics that include “Carrie,” “The Shining” and “It” – has always exhibited an incredibly humanistic approach to storytelling and has straddled a lot of genres beyond just horror, including “The Shawshank Redemption” and “The Green Mile,” both of which were adapted into films that were nominated for multiple Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

“The Life of Chuck” celebrates the life of Charles “Chuck” Krantz told in three parts, backwards over time. Though it has elements of fear and grief surrounding death, the film still feels very hopeful and life-affirming. “I’ve never worked on something more joyful. I’ve never worked on anything like this – a movie that does not have one ounce of cynicism. I wanted so badly for it to exist in the world for my children. This is a movie I wanted them to be able to find in their lives when they might need it. And because it’s especially a new thing for me. I wanted to protect that swelling in my heart that I felt when I read it,” says director Flanagan.

It’s a wonderful feeling that audiences at the Toronto International Film Festival experienced as well. “The Life of Chuck” won the People’s Choice Award at the 2024 TIFF. Flanagan hopes that more movie audiences will experience the peace, hope, joy and affirmation he felt while reading the novella and working on the movie. “I hope the movie helps people look at our world today, at the challenges of each of our individual lives, and encourages them to sometimes put down the briefcase and let yourself dance, whatever that means to you, whatever kind of expression of joy dancing represents, you know, whether that’s painting or just being with family, writing, being athletic, you know, all these different ways that we can let our hearts out,” says Flanagan.
