Movie Review: Tia Madre

Tia Madre is a horror story told through the eyes of a child: a clingy, hyper- imaginative and slightly twisted ten year old girl named Camille whose mother Emilia inexplicably changes into something else, something more sinister, something more violent, something more distant, something that isn’t her mother anymore and quite possibly isn’t human.

What a great performance given by Cherie Gil and Janna Agoncillo for this film  that I think will bag the best actress and best supporting actress for this festival. Jana is like an old soul, giving a different kind of depth for her role as a disturbed child. She really impress me with this film especially with her performance towards the end of the film. Cherie on the other hand complements with her effective performance as a weird affectionate mother that challenges her capability as an actress for this film. The weirdness of the film was achieved through its atmospheric visuals and on point edit with its inner layer message on how family or loved ones is really important in building the foundation of character of a child.

My Verdict: 3.5/5
