Synopsis of the Film

Katapusang Labok depicts the struggles of fishermen who must deal with environmental abuse and the effects of coral harvesting on their livelihood. In a rural seaside town, Randy, a fisherman, leaves the sea and turns to religion and cockfighting. Then a fellow fisherman invites him to join the fight against coral harvesting. Randy is caught between his devotion and the struggle of the fisher folks. The film had made it to the Cannes Short Film Corner.

Synopsis of the Film

Mac-Mac stands on the threshold of manhood.  But he must hurdle a case characterized by excessive blood, superstitions, and an old man with failing vision known as Mang Benny.  Will he be able to complete his journey into manhood?  Or will he forever be marooned on the island between manhood and adolescence? This short film was also feature to MMFF 2012 New Wave Short Films.

Synopsis of the Film

Sa Wakas is a story of a father who drives his daughter in his tricycle to find a health center that would admit her as she loses so much blood.  Will they make it or would the life of young Kat-Kat be put to waste?  It is a paramount reflection of a father-daughter bond tested by cultural, political and religious hypocrisy.

Synopsis of the Film

The Houseband is an essay about a typical OFW family, with the OFW wife as breadwinner and the husband left in the Philippines to care for the children.  Technology and the internet bridges the physical distance but shatters domestic harmony when the wife, on a Skype video call, sees a bra, not hers, hanging in the marital closet.

Synopsis of the Film

A 12-year-old girl named Onang (Yssa Ramos) who lived all her life with her widowed father Tatang (Ronnie Lazaro) at the mountaintop in Ilocos Sur found herself at the doorstep of reaching her dreams – to be a performer.  Onang became a member of a choir which would represent their town at a competition in Manila.  Despite of the disapproval of her Tatang, she did everything possible to be a member of the choir.  Onang was not successful at her first attempt to perform with the choir in Manila.  She ran away from her disapproving father to go to the city of Manila where she could realize her dreams and live a new life.  But Onang learned that staying was more impossible than leaving.

Synopsis of the Film

A 12 year-old boy named Junjun finds himself running around his new found home, with children who taught him various Filipino games. Unaware of the impending relocation plans set to destroy their new home, Junjun continues to learn and play Bangsak, Bente Uno and other Filipino games with his friends. He soon discovers this demolition during a series of games that momentarily stops their play. Set against the backdrop of a slum area in Quezon City, Junjun and his friends return to their games—with or without a house to go home to.

Synopsis of the Film

Tutob begins when recent bombings in the region put authorities on alert.  A mysterious, strange-looking native Maranao man dressed up in Muslim attire shows up.  He is tasked to fetch a package from his boss' contact.  From a rural area in the mountains, he rides his motorcycle to the city to get the package.  On his way back, he is stopped at an army checkpoint.  Speaking Maranao, he says he doesn’t know what’s in the package, but the Visayan-speaking soldiers don’t understand him and insist on opening it.

Synopsis of the Film

A desaparecido goes home and searches for the society's spirit of love, truth and freedom.On the eve of his birthday, Makuy goes home from an exposure trip.  After witnessing the squabble of his parents, he leaves home to search for Carl and to celebrate with him instead.  On his way to find his partner, truth unfolds.   Makuy is one of the increasing number of victims of enforced disappearance in the country.  He is one of those imprisoned in a society oblivious of justice and truth.

Cinemalaya 2013 will be held on July 26 - August 4 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines and Ayala Cinemas: Trinoma, Greenbelt 3, and Alabang Town Center.
