THE Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) has assigned ratings for the re-release of eight movies in the “Harry Potter” film franchise and several local and foreign films hitting cinemas this week.
MTRCB Chair and CEO Lala Sotto expressed optimism that the reissued “Harry Potter” films will again draw moviegoers of all ages, even as she underscored the role of parents in guiding their children’s viewing habits.
“Sa nakaraang Responsableng Panonood campaign namin sa Naga City, Camarines Sur, napakinggan namin ang mga saloobin ng mga magulang doon na naiintindihan nila ang kanilang tungkulin sa paggabay sa panonood ng kanilang mga anak,” Sotto said.
“Bago pa man tayo bumili ng tiket, silipin muna natin ang MTRCB ratings ng mga pelikulang ito at siguruhin na angkop ito sa edad at pang-unawa ng ating mga anak,” she went on.
Originally released from 2001 to 2011, the eight “Harry Potter” movies received G (General Audience) and PG (Parental Guidance) ratings from the Agency.
“Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” was rated G since it is suitable for all audiences.
The seven other movies – “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,” “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,” “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix,” “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I” and “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II” – were rated PG.
The Filipino comedy, “Ang Pinakamasarap na Pares sa Balat ng Lupa,” was rated R-16. It stars Jerald Napoles and Pepe Herrera.
The MTRCB noted the frequent use of strong swear words, menacing language, as well as scenes that “may contain comic violence, mature themes, suggestive humor, sexual acts, brief and infrequent depiction of drugs or their use and references to death or serious illness.”
“Filipiñana,” a locally-produced drama starring Jorrybell Agoto, Agot Isidro and Angeli Bayani, was rated PG. It will be exclusively screened in SM Cinemas.
The movie has mature themes and “unsettling insights about a young woman’s workplace, the elite members and her own personal story,” the Agency said.
The MTRCB added that the violence depicted in the film is minimal to non-graphic, and has minimal, infrequent swear words and some mentions of private body parts.
Children may enjoy “Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie” as it was given a G rating. The adventure comedy is based on the popular TV series and features McKenna Grace, Fortune Feimster and Jennifer Hudson.
The MTRCB said the film “promotes teamwork, courage, problem-solving and friendship” and is suitable for all ages.
The Agency also assigned PG and R-13 ratings to five other foreign-produced movies.
“Meet Me at the Eclipse,” a Vietnamese film that will be exclusively shown in SM Cinemas, was rated PG. It deals with mature emotional themes such as lost love, life-changing decisions and reconciliation “in a wholesome, reflective manner that is suitable for younger viewers with parental guidance.”
“The characters’ actions emphasize love, forgiveness, personal growth and making thoughtful life choices,” the MTRCB said.
“A Southern Haunting” was rated PG and will be exclusively shown in Megaworld Cinemas.
It stars Beth Dover, Ato Essandoh, Dylan Baker, Merle Ackelson and Donovan Ailton and tells the story of an ex-slave family attempting to uncover the truth behind their land.
The sci-fi and action-adventure film, “The Dog Stars,” will be exclusively screened in SM Cinemas.
It was rated R-13 for its infrequent and non-graphic depiction of violence and suffering, as well as its mature themes of a post-apocalyptic world and cannibalism.
“Hope,” a South Korean sci-fi thriller, was also rated R-13 due to its scenes of violence, peril, creature horror, alien elements and strong language.
The romantic comedy, “One Night Only,” featuring Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner, was similarly rated R-13 for its discreet, infrequent, brief and non-graphic depictions of sexual activity.
A G or General Audience rating means a film is suitable for all ages, while PG or Parental Guidance means a parent or guardian must be present to supervise younger viewers.
An R-13 means a film is suitable for
viewers aged 13 and up, while an R-16 is for 16 years old and above. An R-18 is
for adult audiences only.
