FDCP honors 100 years of Eddie Romero at the opening of PFIM 2024

The Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) kicked off the 4th Philippine Film Industry Month (PFIM) with a tribute to National Artist for Film Eddie Romero on September 1, 2024, at the Metropolitan Theater. Themed "Tuloy ang Tradisyon ng Pelikulang Pilipino," the event celebrated the enduring legacy of Philippine cinema.

A free screening of Romero’s critically acclaimed 1980 film "Aguila" drew a full house, accompanied by a mini-exhibit showcasing his contributions to the industry, marking the start of the month-long celebration.

In his opening remarks, FDCP Chairperson and CEO Jose Javier Reyes highlighted the significance of honoring National Artists in shaping the future of Filipino filmmaking: "Sa pagbibigay halaga sa mga obra ng mga National Artist, mauunawaan natin kung ano ang maaaring direksyon ng pelikulang Pilipino at ng susunod na henerasyon ng manlilikha ng pelikula.”

Jeffrey Sonora, Vice President of FPJ Productions, shared insights into the restoration process of "Aguila" in collaboration with the Philippine Film Archive (PFA), ensuring Romero’s work remains accessible to future generations.

The screening was attended by the relatives of Romero, including veteran actress and “Aguila” cast member, Chanda Romero.

Also present were representatives from the Filipino Screenwriters Guild, Film Academy of the Philippines, Aktor PH, Directors' Guild of the Philippines, Society of Filipino Archivists for Film, ABS-CBN Film Restoration, Academic Film Society, and members of the press.

The PFIM 2024 opening ceremony was hosted by Kakki Teodoro and presented by the FDCP in partnership with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Metropolitan Theater with the support from FPJ Productions.
