Since Don Lorenzo has not produced a single painting for a long time, the family is in financial trouble. The unmarried sisters have had to rely on their seemingly more successful brother Manolo and sister Pepang. Their siblings urge Candida and Paula to sell the house.
To have a source of income, the sisters take in a boarder, Tony Javier. Meanwhile, Don Lorenzo becomes a recluse. The painter’s self-portrait fetches a high sum as it attracts the curiosity of many individuals which include pretentious art critics, bonafide journalist and family friend Bitoy Camacho, Senator Perico who asks the sisters to donate the portrait to the government and Tony who tries to convince Candida and Paula to sell it to an American.
Watching Ang Larawan is like watching a musical play in a silver screen. The film has been able to recreate the feels of watching a theater play starting from sound, music, blocking, script and acting. The dynamic and heartfelt portrayal of the ensemble cast, paralleled with the outstanding production value and techinical excellence are the major reasons to watch this film on this year's Metro Manila Film Festival. Ang Larawan I think is one of the front runner as Best Picture in this festival.
If your a fan of a musical film, you'll definitely enjoy the songs and the musical arrangements along the film. I got entertained by the character of Ms. Celeste Legaspi in the film, while Rachel Alejandro as Paula and Joanna Ampil as Candida are revelation delivering a great performance anchoring the story of the film. Paulo Avelino as Tony Javier and Sandino Martin presence are felt in the film.
Ang Larawan is a powerful, haunting look back at our country's culture and history. A film that deserves to be seen by younger generation across the country just to give the youth a feel for what was Filipino life was all about way back then. Ang Larawan is not only a period film and celebration of our culture but also touches your heart with its life lessons showing the importance of a family.
My Verdict: 5/5
