film “Birdshot” by acclaimed director Mikhail Red bagged the Best Asian
Future Film award at the recently concluded 29th Tokyo International
Film Festival. The awarding and closing ceremony was held on November 3.
Red alongside producer Pamela L. Reyes and lead actors Mary Joy Apostol
and Arnold Reyes received the trophy.
“Birdshot” is a mystery-thriller that tells a story of a young Filipina farm girl who wanders into the boundaries of a Philippine reservation forest. Deep within the reservation she mistakenly shoots and kills a critically endangered and protected Philippine Eagle. As the local authorities begin a manhunt to track down the poacher of a national bird, their investigation leads them to an even more horrific discovery.
In his acceptance speech, Red dedicated the award to fellow struggling young filmmakers and his home country, the Philippines: “This is for everyone who wanted to fly, but was shot down. For everyone who wanted to speak out, but was silenced.”
