Movie Review: Shorts B - Sinag Maynila Film Festival 2016 Short Feature


Neon

Neon follows Eli, a frustrated yong adult as he works in his older brother convenience store. As Eli arranges packs of tissue paper in an aisle, a young mother approaches him and asks for a roll, to whick Eli replies violently replies that she wouldn't need tissue if here children weren't messy. The young mother consequently reports Eli to his manager. An altercation ensues between Eli and his manager/older brother to the point where he leaves Eli with one last day for him to fix his attitude of he'll be fired from his job.


My Verdict:  3.5/5


Apo

Fed up with her daily routine in the province, an old lady (Apo Lucing) who's in pain for several years of yearning is patiently waiting for her grandchild to come. As day passes, due to her severe longing and depression, traces of psychological implications became noticeable to the woman. She began to create a persona of a child whom she can talk to and be with her.


My Verdict:  3/5


Ina Namin (Our Mother)

A nurse is forced to watch over his best friend's aging, senile mother who believes she is God. The nurse, David, needs to convince Mommy Dea, the mother to get checked by a psychiatrist because of her progressing dementia. But, she won't agree. Dea, in turn, tries to convince David that she does not need a doctor, because she is God.


My Verdict:  3.5/5


Apuhap

This film revolves around the story of two blind woman; a braille tutor and her student who eventually developed feelings towards her. One day the student had the chance to have her sight back leaving the tutor empty after finding life and vibrancy from her student's company. Would they be able to express their love?

My Verdict:  3.5/5


Ang Pieta (The Pieta)

A mother named Lourdes, is still waiting for the return of her disappeared son. While his older son, Richard have an affair with his brothers' past lover, Anne. The Pieta become a symbol of hope for the grieving family. It is narrated through poetry of the past of present and the present of the past.

My Verdict:  3/5


The Foreseeing

Bong is a man who grew old and out of ambition, living out the later years of his life lacking variety as a bicicle messenger rounding the streets of Binondo, Manila. One afternoon, nearing the end of his shift, he encouters a package with no return address. Unable to either return or deliver the package, he decides to bring it home and try again the next day. As he was getting ready for work, he finds that the package has been opened. Curiously, he checks the contents-a pack of fortune cookies. Everything changes for him from then on. The Foreseeing tells a man who soon discovers the consequences of tampering with  fate.
