Movie Review: The Substance

The Substance is a satirical body horror-thriller crafted by writer-director Coralie Fargeat. The film follows the story of Elisabeth Sparkle, portrayed by Demi Moore, a former A-list actress struggling with the passage of time. Elisabeth becomes intrigued by a mysterious new drug that promises a fleeting return to her youthful self. After a single injection, she temporarily transforms into the stunning twenty-something Sue, played by Margaret Qualley.

However, there’s a catch: Elisabeth must alternate between her two bodies, spending exactly one week in each. This intriguing premise raises questions about identity, self-worth, and the societal pressures surrounding beauty.

Prepare yourself for a challenging viewing experience in The Substance!  It is a thought-provoking and unsettling movie that explores themes of self-love and contentment in a unique and visually striking way. Demi Moore’s performance is top notch that will make you feel immersed with the character that she is portraying. Even Margaret Qualley is equally effective in giving us an effective villain that will make her love and hate at the same time. The film's blend of style and substance is sure to captivate viewers from start to finish. It is a thrilling commentary on beauty standards, packaged in an intriguing box of style and substance working harmoniously together. So if you are up for a different kind of suspense on social commentary, The Substance is a good catch.

The Substance starring Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley & Dennis Quiad is showing in Philippine cinemas starting September 25. A CreaZion Studios presentation.

My Verdict: 4.5/5
