Movie Review: Penduko

Penduko follows the story of Pedro, a young man skilled with mythical and supernatural powers, which he and his father, Apo Tisot, inherited from their ancestors. But unlike Apo Tisot (John Arcilla), who uses his gift to help the poor and sick, Pedro has other plans for himself.

After cutting ties with his father and leaving his hometown, Pedro moves to the city to follow his dreams, but so far, Pedro has yet to find a way to do odd jobs here and there to make ends meet, completely wasting his gift and potential.

But all that changes when a secret organization owned by Gat Blanco (Albert Martinez) hears about his skill and offers him a job as an albularyo agent. As Pedro works for the organization, he further hones his talent, which impresses many but also makes others jealous.

Then, out of nowhere, a powerful force of evil appears and endangers the lives of many, forcing Pedro to put the good of others before him.

Penduko is your entertaining adventure film this Christmas. Kudos to the film for a different take on superhero film that highlights Filipino myths and folklore. It is like the local version of Harry Potter. I love the attention to detail of props, costume, name of characters and production design of the film that is very Filipino and has an inner story and symbolism. The film brings you into a new world that will make you ponder and be interesting to watch for. Matteo is such a cutie and totally engaging in this film. This is the lightest that I have seen him in a film and this is a really good break for him showcasing his acting capabilities.  The fight scenes and special effects are on point and the film brings  us to a new world. The pacing and editing is well thought and sync to match the feels and vibes of the film. The bonus part of the film is its theme song that truly matches the vision of the film. So if you want to watch an original Filipino superhero film, Penduko is a good choice.

My Verdict: 4/5
