Firefly is about a
young boy that is order to fulfill a promise to his mother, he searches
for the mythical island described in her bedtime stories, a place where
one can make any wish upon seeing the light of a thousand fireflies. The story begins
with the adult Tonton being interviewed by a skeptical journalist after
winning the National Book Award. The interview unravels the origin of
his stories: Set in 1999 and told through Tonton’s rose-colored memories
of life with his mother – a vintage storybook.
One story in
particular sticks with Tonton. The story goes: Once upon a time in a
mythical island, a brave firefly mustered all its light and defeated a
vicious dog to protect his butterfly friend. To encourage Tonton, Elay
tells him that the island is real and that you could make a wish if you
ever made it there. In an old notebook, Elay draws a map to the island.
And Tonton had taken his mother's words literally: that he must make the
journey to the island like they promised. On the road, he meets three
strangers who will either help him or hinder his quest…
