Movie Review: GomBurZa
Zamora (Enchong Dee) — who were executed by garrote in 1872 falsely accused of sedition and treason. The film chronicles the struggle that began with the secularization movement led by Padre Pedro Pelaez (Piolo Pascual). From this movement, the advocacy for Filipinization of the Church was continued and championed by priests. They inspired the educated middle class, liberal intellectuals and students, including Jose Rizal's brother Paciano Mercado (Elijah Canlas). The martyrdom of GomBurZa never silenced the enlightened. Their deaths influenced others to continue the struggle, eventually inspiring our national hero, Jose Rizal, who dedicated his novel “El Filibusterismo” to the three priests. A heroic drama laden with intrigue, battle scenes and love of country, GomBurZa is an epic tribute to the people behind the birth of our Filipino consciousness.

Movie Review: Firefly
Firefly is about a
young boy that is order to fulfill a promise to his mother, he searches
for the mythical island described in her bedtime stories, a place where
one can make any wish upon seeing the light of a thousand fireflies. The story begins
with the adult Tonton being interviewed by a skeptical journalist after
winning the National Book Award. The interview unravels the origin of
his stories: Set in 1999 and told through Tonton’s rose-colored memories
of life with his mother – a vintage storybook.
One story in
particular sticks with Tonton. The story goes: Once upon a time in a
mythical island, a brave firefly mustered all its light and defeated a
vicious dog to protect his butterfly friend. To encourage Tonton, Elay
tells him that the island is real and that you could make a wish if you
ever made it there. In an old notebook, Elay draws a map to the island.
And Tonton had taken his mother's words literally: that he must make the
journey to the island like they promised. On the road, he meets three
strangers who will either help him or hinder his quest…
