MTRCB honors Philippine Creative Industry stakeholders

The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) held its much-anticipated “Gabi ng Pasasalamat,” on December 3, 2024, to recognize the works and contribution of stakeholders from the creative and media industries.

The event was attended by executives and representatives from television networks, film producers, directors, cinema operators, media practitioners and distributors.

MTRCB Chairperson and CEO Lala Sotto-Antonio expressed her heartfelt gratitude to everyone for their vital role in shaping the country’s film industry.

“Tonight, we gather to celebrate gratitude, partnership and the shared vision that binds us as regulator, stakeholders and champions of responsible media,” Sotto-Antonio said.

As the MTRCB approaches its 40th anniversary next year, the event highlighted the agency’s ongoing commitment to upholding Filipino values while adapting as well to the ever-evolving landscape of content creation and consumption.

“Our journey has always been about service—serving the Filipino family, supporting the creative industry and upholding our Filipino cultural values,” Sotto-Antonio said in her speech.

The “Gabi ng Pasasalamat” also served as a platform to strengthen ties with stakeholders and to reaffirm the MTRCB’s commitment to supporting the Philippine creative industry.

Acknowledging the challenges posed by the rise of digital platforms, Sotto-Antonio reiterated the Agency’s dedication and proactive approach to foster collaborations with different groups and institutions.

“We are also committed to continuously building partnerships with government and private institutions, including Subscription Video On Demand services like Netflix, Disney Plus, Warner Bros. and other social media platforms like Meta,” said Sotto-Antonio.

She also bared the Board’s ongoing initiatives, including its flagship program, the “Responsableng Panonood” or responsible viewing.

Prominent personalities like TV5 President and CEO Guido Zaballero and the Cinema Exhibitors Association of the Philippines (CEAP) expressed their gratitude and shared their solidarity with MTRCB’s vision and mission.

“We would like to thank the MTRCB for its partnership with TV5, with the MediaQuest Group, and its support for the entire film and TV industry,” said Zaballero. “Together, let’s continue to inspire and unite the Filipino families to the magic of local entertainment. Fostering a brighter community and a brighter future for generations.”

“The Cinema Exhibitors Association of the Philippines would like to express our gratitude to MTRCB headed by Chair Lala Sotto-Antonio for her support, leadership and commitment to help the cinema industry,” said Ms. Bing Advincula, CEAP Board Member and Robinsons Movieworld Operations Director, emphasizing that they appreciate the active communications of the Agency with the CEAP.

Lawyer Josabeth “Joji” Alonso, a noted film producer, also expressed her solidarity with MTRCB’s mission to ensure age-appropriate classification thrusts, with TV host Amy Perez echoing the same sentiment in her warmly applauded, humor-laden speech.

“We are one with the MTRCB and its esteemed officials, officers and members in their efforts to regain the public’s support and bring back the golden years of Philippine cinema,” Alonso said in her remarks. “Now is the best time for all stakeholders to unify and collaborate in uplifting the state of our movie industry.”

Sotto-Antonio also thanked the Philippine Senate for supporting the proposed amendments to the MTRC, B’s 40-year-old charter, saying, “The proposed amendments to the MTRCB charter are not only timely but necessary in addressing the evolving entertainment landscape. By supporting these amendments, we do not only protect the Filipino families, but also create a more responsible media environment for our youth.”

“The MTRCB looks forward to another year of strengthened partnerships and shared successes with its stakeholders as it continues its mission to serve the Filipino public through responsible media regulation,” said Sotto-Antonio.
