From Cannes, to Locarno to Austin, the critically-acclaimed Pinoy action film finally comes home!
The internationally acclaimed film "Topakk" is set to participate in the
2024 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF), building on its critical
success and vibrant storytelling that has captivated audiences
worldwide. With its unique narrative and compelling character
development, it is anticipated to make a significant impact at the
festival, further enhancing its reputation and spotlighting the creative
talents behind it.
THE action-packed thriller Topakk, produced by Nathan Studios, Fusee, and Strawdogs, continues to make waves internationally and locally. From Cannes to its world premiere at the Locarno Film Festival, the film is now an official entry to the 2024 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF).
Directed by Richard V. Somes, Topakk is centered on a former special forces operative battling PTSD whose path intersects with a brother and sister both on the run from criminal forces. Topakk showcases a career-defining turn by lead stars Arjo Atayde and Julia Montes.
Atayde’s performance captivated film aficionados in Cannes; Locarno;and Austin, Texas – where he personally graced screenings to represent the film.
The film’s international title, Triggered, helped expand its appeal to a global audience, where it received praise for its unique approach to action and psychological drama. Viewers at international screenings reacted strongly, with many praising the film's raw intensity and powerful performances. Julia Montes steps into a gritty, action-packed role unlike any she’s done before, earning recognition for her versatility and emotional depth. Cinematographer Louie Quirino delivers striking visuals that heighten the film’s tension and drama, complemented by Jose Antonio Buencamino’s evocative score.
During the December 4, 2024 media conference for the film "Topakk," lead actors Arjo Atayde and Julia Montes discussed their immersive experiences with intense action scenes, while co-stars Enchong Dee and Sylvia Sanchez highlighted the film's importance in raising awareness about PTSD (Post-traumatic stress disorder). Director Richard Somes articulated his vision for bringing Filipino action to the forefront of cinema, emphasizing the project's significance in revitalizing this genre in the Philippines. Hardcore action film 'Topakk' receives 2 ratings from MTRCB, R16 at SM Cinemas and R18 outside SM Cinemas. The film's producers had to voluntarily cut some of the more hardcore action sequences from "Topakk," so that they would get a favorable classification and rating from the MTRCB.
Produced by a powerhouse team – Nathan Studios, Fusee, and Strawdogs – Topakk highlights the capabilities of Filipino filmmakers to deliver world-class productions.
"Topakk" will hit cinemas on December 25, as part of the 50th MMFF.
