"Cayetano In Action with Boy Abunda" shares valuable advice on being a comaker

What do you do when helping turns into a heavy burden? That’s what happened to two teachers who sought legal advice on Cayetano in Action with Boy Abunda (CIA with BA). In the programs Payong Kapatid segment, Teachers Luz and Marietta shared their story about a simple act of kindness that unexpectedly became a legal problem. According to them, one of their fellow teachers asked if they could be co-makers in a money-lending transaction. Out of concern and empathy, they agreed to help.

Unfortunately, their colleague passed away before settling the debt. Seeking clarity, Luz and Marietta turned to Senator Alan Peter Cayetano and the show’s legal experts, Atty. Bernadette Maybituin and Atty. Matt Cesa, for guidance. Sen. Alan shared valuable principles about setting boundaries and understanding responsibilities when it comes to lending and borrowing.

“The closer you are sa isang tao, the more important na merong kontrata. Kailangan may boundary,” he reminded, highlighting that even close relationships need clear agreements. He added, “Sa bawat karapatan, may obligasyon. Umutang kayo, umutang si ma’m… meron siyang obligasyon magbayad. At ‘yung nagpapautang, may karapatang maningil.”

In the case of Luz and Marietta, the court has already ruled that they must pay the debt of their late colleague. Still, they’re hoping that the payment can be taken from the deceased teacher’s remaining assets.

However, the family of their colleague insisted that debts aren’t inherited. Kuya Alan clarified the confusion: “Totoo ‘yon, na hindi namamana ang utang pero ‘yung iniwan niya, bago mapunta sa kanila (sa pamilya), ‘yon muna ay obligasyon na bayaran ‘yung utang.”

In the end, Kuya Alan pledged to help Luz and Marietta in their financial struggle and in facing the case, as part of honoring the hard work and dedication of teachers. Through Payong Kapatid, the program once again reminded viewers that good intentions should always go hand in hand with legal awareness.
