Movie Review: Maria

Maria follows the story of a former cartel assassin
named Lily who fakes her own death after an unfulfilled mission that earns the wrath of her organization. She flees to a distant province where she completely transforms her life. Changing her name to Maria, she meets Bert, a respectable businessman who becomes her husband. They have a daughter named Mina.

Maria’s peaceful life is cut short when the cartel learns of her whereabouts. Kaleb, the man whose orders she didn’t follow in the past, tracks her down right inside her home. Failing to protect her family, she returns to a life of violence with revenge on her mind.

Brutal, raw, and stunning. If they were trying to make a well made local action film, then they succeeded. Amazing visuals and fantastic fight choreography make this film stunning to watch. Maria gets enough mileage out of its stylish action sequences. Kudos to Cristine Reyes for delivering such smooth fight scenes that is not look like a rehearsed one but like a professional fighter. Cristine not only delivers in the action scenes but also shows sensitivity on her character as a loving mother. Ronnie Lazaro’s performance is also noteworthy wherein his character serve as the anchor of the flow of the story. Maria is a visceral action packed espionage fight-fest that utilizes amazing stunt performances between its cast. So if you want to watch a decently made modern Filipino action film, watch Maria.

My Verdict: 3.5/5
