Movie Review: Ulan

Ulan tells the story of Maya who was raised by her grandmother. As a child, Maya became aware of the mythical create called "Tikbalang" (half-horse, half-human) and the superstition that rain pours in the middle of a sunny day when two of these creatures are being wed. According to her grandmother, it means that heaven is not in favour of this union.

As a young woman, Maya is a hopeless romantic. She works in a publishing company as an editorial assistant. She has fallen in love and has been heartbroken twice.  And then she meets Peter who is kind, thoughtful, helpful and every bit a boyfriend material. But Maya realizes that each time she's onto something good, rain falls all of a sudden.

Ulan deftly balances romance and folklore story to deliver an interesting and  unique love story. What makes Ulan work is it doesn’t shy away from its intention to  stick to its subject matter which is self love. Ulan is sure on its intention and successfully delivered. Nadine Lustre shines and owns the film well with her subtle acting that gave justice to the role of Maya. Marco Gumabao and Carlo Aquino Aquino equally deliver good performance and such an eye candy in this film. The performance of young Maya (Elia Ilano)  is endearing while Angeli Bayani's performance is such a solid and a scene stealer. Ulan will keep you interested on its premise and make you smile on its engaging treatment on handling pain in love. Ulan is a rare romance film. One that takes on a common subject and creates something moving  and beautiful. The characters, humans and elemental creatures alike, are very well realized, while the ensemble cast gave a decent breakthrough performance. Ulan is so far the best film of 2019.

My Verdict: 5/5
