Movie Review: Hukluban

Hukluban examines the plight of the cursed woman, Mira, over the span of three eras over six generations and her search for true love and a man played by actor Kiko Matos. Hukluban is a “gothic horror romance. The story was inspired by his 1983 drama thriller “Gabi kung sumikat ang araw,” which features a cursed woman who is beautiful woman at night but transforms into a hukluban, an aging old woman, by sunrise.  Immortal, the woman can only hope for true love to break the curse.

I've been able to watch the premiere night of Hukluban last october 21 2014 at SM North EDSA D Block.
I am surprised by the turn out of this film as I did not expect that the approach of the horror element will be
more of a psychological. This not the usual horror flick that theres a lot of screaming and surprise element all throught out the film. The scary factor in the film is within the story itself and I can say that the film is successful in
delivering that kind of approach to the audience. My most favorite segment in the film is the Kandro episode in which Kiko plays an NPA. I must say that I appreciate the subtlety and silence of the film integrated with an artistic shot in every scene.

Kiko Matos shows his versatility here as an actor. In every episode he shows different dynamics in acting. Krista Miller also delivers in this film as an upocming actress. This film has given her a good break to showcase her acting prowess. I also appreciate the location of the film as it showcase the nature's beauty of Tayabas Quezon that gave a lot of good visuals in the film. So if you want to watch a different kind of local psychological horror flick, catch this film on Sineng Pambansa Horror Plus Film Festival.

My Verdict:  3/5
