A photographer mesmerized in a forest's beauty will get more than he
bargained for, when he discovers that the forest is not just full of
luscious greens, but it is also full of humans with lustful greed.
Francis (Lucero) is a photojournalist commissioned to take pictures of
the largest flower of genus Rafflesia, a parasitic plant species endemic
in the province of Bukidnon known as Bo-o to the Bogobo tribe or
Kolon-Busaw to the Higaonon tribe. But soon, he discovers more than what
he bargained for — an illegal logging operation and a 'prostitution
den.' This is where he meets Angela (Dovey) and her younger sister Karla
(Khang), who are both captive prostitutes. Francis' professional
endeavor takes a backseat as he musters all his courage to save both
girls before it's too late.
Virgin Forest is one of the daring Filipino films I've seen recently.
It's not only the naked bodies and sexy scenes that will shock you but
also the impact of the message of the film after watching it. I like
how the magic realism and harsh reality combine with the treatment that
they made in the film. Even the trees and snakes are symbolic and
have something to tell on the film. There is a lot of symbolism in the
film that it's up to the audience on how they are going to interpret
it. Virgin Forest has a clever and thought-provoking screenplay that
keeps you wonder while the cinematography let you experience the
mystery and thrill inside the forest. Director Brillante Mendoza gives
us once again a different kind of film with unique storytelling and subject matter about corruption in the environment that is usually not being tackled in Filipino film. Sid Lucero stands out in the film. His performance is very natural and just hits the right emotion in all of the scenes. Angeli
Khang and Rob Guinto are promising actresses to watch for that shows
decent acting for their challenging roles in this film. They do not just have a sexy body but also have a potential of becoming a character and serious actress. Vince Rillon is an effective antagonist of the film that you will definitely hate while watching. Erlinda
Villalobos is also a scene stealer even if she only has one scene, she
nailed her character well. Virgin Forest is an eye opener, a reflection on what is happening in our society and has a relevant story to tell.
My Verdict: 4/5
