Bakwit Boys - the rockin’ romantic musical with a heart!

Bakwit Boys - the romantic musical written and directed by hitmaker Jason Paul Laxamana and produced by dynamic production company T-REX Entertainment dares to break new ground with a heartwarming story and six original songs that are set to capture the hearts and minds of viewers.

Opening in cinemas on August 15 as part of the Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino (PPP), “Bakwit Boys” tells the journey of the cash-strapped Datul Brothers: Elias, Sonny, Joey and Philip (collectively known as the band, Bakwit Boys) to fulfilling their dreams of becoming genuine recording stars. Accompanying the Bakwit Boys on the road to fame is Rose who offers to help record their original songs and have these played on the radio. The band’s name is taken from the word “bakwit,” a Filipinized term for “evacuate,” since the Datul brothers are evacuees from their typhoon-ravaged province.

The romantic musical “Bakwit Boys," is graded A by the Cinema Evaluation Board (CEB)

The inspiring movie brings together the break-out artists in the biz: rising actress Devon Seron; stage heartthrob Vance Larena; noontime TV idols Ryle Santiago and Nikko Natividad; and singing champion Mackie Empuerto in a tale about four brothers and the dreamer who motivates them.

As a super typhoon ravages the hometown of a family band composed of four brothers, their musical pursuits are put to a halt. They are forced to move from Isabela all the way to Pampanga to stay with their grandfather. While taking refuge in this distant farmland, the Datul brothers, who make songs together as the family band “Bakwit Boys,” put their musical talents to good use. The eldest brother, Elias (Vance Larena), is the band vocalist together with the youngest, Sonny (Mackie Empuerto), while Joey (Ryle Santiago) plays the guitar and Philip (Nikko Natividad) composes their songs. Not wanting to burden their grandfather, they agree to perform their original song in a town fiesta to earn some cash. Their performance impresses Rose (Devon Seron), a rich city girl who is passionate for music. She offers to help the boys record their songs and have them played on the radio. Individual interests and personal conflicts test their unity as a family and a band, as they struggle to make sense of life’s ironies and tragedies.

The cast were drawn to being part of “Bakwit Boys” because it tackles themes about youth and family, and also because music is a major element in the story.

The film features six original songs by Tarlac-based singer-songwriter Jhaye Cura, a good friend of Direk Jason Paul whom the director had previously collaborated with on a number of Kapampangan songs that they have also turned into music videos.

Aside from the original versions as sung by the cast members in the movie, the songs also have pop versions performed by today’s biggest recording artists. Four of them include Mark Oblea who sings the heart-wrenching melody about longing for a lost love entitled, “Fiona;” Jay R who brings to life the enthralling tune about having a secret crush in “Patibong;” rising talent Sean Oliver who performs the Bakwit Boys’ anthem about overcoming your struggles for your dreams, “Ligtas Ka Na;” and platinum recording star Ice Seguerra who sings about being blissfully in love in “Tayong Dalawa.”

Also movie's cast are Alma Concepcion, Nanding Josef, Joric Raval, Michael "Eagle" Riggs, with special appearances by Sebastian Castro, Cai Cortez, Kiray Celis and Albie Casiño.
