A tribute to the extraordinary journey of the Loboc Children’s
Choir, which began in the 1980s in the quiet riverside town of Loboc,
Bohol. Composed of children as young as 9 to 13 years old, the choir had
to rise above poverty, limited resources, and natural calamities – all
in pursuit of a single dream: to let their voices be heard beyond the
walls of their classroom. Their dreams burned brightly, fanned by the
steadfast guidance of their teacher, Ma’am Alma, and the unwavering
support of Equet Butalid, a cultural advocate of Bohol who believed
deeply in their talent.
Song of the Fireflies is
a film with heart, a nostalgic and inspiring retelling of the historical
journey of the famed Loboc Children's Choir. It's inpsring,
beautifully scored, and pleasant to the senses—a story that sings, not
just in melody, but in spirit.
In her film debut, Morissette delivers
a deeply emotional performance. Her expressive eyes alone speak
volumes, portraying her character’s inner strength with authenticity. Rachel Alejandro stands out as the poised, passionate instructor, embodying sophistication and dedication to her craft.
Noel Comia Jr., already known for his work in TV and theater, brings natural depth to his role. He proves he’s a young actor to be reckoned with. Similarly, Krystal Brimner is a revelation—brimming with potential and screen presence that marks her as one to watch.
Musically, the film is a treasure. With Krina Cayabyab as musical director and original songs from Ryan Cayabyab, Louie Ocampo, Raymond Marasigan, and Jazz Nicolas, the film beautifully showcases Filipino musical talent. Every
note supports the rhythm and beat of story, and every song leaves an imprint. Bohol
serves not just as a backdrop, but as a character in itself—its
landscapes and local spirit lovingly captured through excellent
production design and cinematography. The film’s visuals make it feel genuine and warm.
Overall, Song of the Fireflies is more than a musical film. It’s a moving tribute to hope, heritage, and the transformative power of music. An uplifting journey through music, memory, and Filipino pride.
My Verdict: 4/5
