The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB), led by Chairperson and CEO Lala Sotto-Antonio, recently conducted its Responsableng Panonood (RP) seminar in Negros Occidental, focusing on responsible viewing, guidance and media consumption for Filipino families.
The three-day seminar took place from November 15 to 17, 2024, in the cities of Bacolod, Cadiz and Victorias, with some 587 in attendance.
“Responsableng Panonood,” MTRCB’s flagship program, aims to equip parents and guardians with the tools needed to nurture responsible viewing habits at home and to establish clear screen time guidelines to encourage active parental participation in children's media engagement.
Sotto-Antonio was accompanied by MTRCB Board Members (BMs) Maria Carmen Musngi, a retired teacher from Ateneo de Manila University; Katrina Angela Ebarle, a famous video editor; Lillian Ng Gui, a registered Psychotherapist, Psychometrician and Certified Specialist in Counseling Psychology; Event management expert and producer Eloisa Matias; Lawyer Frances Hellene Abella and Neal Del Rosario, a respected film and television director. They received ample support from BMs Glenn Patricio and Joey Alberto.
The MTRCB team kicked off the seminar at Negros Occidental High School in Bacolod before an enthusiastic audience of 138 teachers and students.
From Bacolod, the BMs moved to Cadiz where they introduced for the first time the Responsableng Panonood program. They were warmly welcomed by 250 participants from Cadiz LGU, members of the academe, parents and supervising adults.
The Local Government of Cadiz requested the BMs for critical pointers to become knowledgeable against harmful media contents and excessive social media use.
“It is very timely that agencies from the national government extend their services, time and effort to the local governments through their grassroots approach and help us educate and promote a healthier way of viewing,” said Councilor Kathrina Kaye Gustilo of Cadiz.
The last day of the caravan was held in Victorias, with Mayor Javier Miguel Benitez hosting the RP seminar for the second time, where the occasion zeroed in on child viewing experiences using digital platforms, MTRCB descriptors, screen time guidelines by age and steps to digital parenting.
“Let us encourage each other not to be passive consumers but active participants. Let us cultivate a mindful media consumption and harness the power of media for good,” Benitez said.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to promote responsible viewing in television and movies was signed in Victorias by Benitez and Sotto-Antonio.
Sotto-Antonio said the role of parents and supervising adults is crucial as they are the first line of defense for children against harmful contents.
“In an era where media extremely influences values, perspectives and behavior, our role as parents and supervising adults is crucial at all times,” Sotto-Antonio said. “Your commitment to guiding and supporting them through responsible media choices shapes not only their viewing habits but also their values and understanding of the world.”
