Movie Review: The Hearing

Embroiled in a legal battle against a powerful figure, a deaf boy, with the support of his parents, crosses paths with a court sign language interpreter who can speak but is voiceless in her own home.

Lucas, a deaf boy from a small fishing village, is sexually abused by Fr. Mejor, an influential priest. After his parents Madonna and Dante discover the truth, they decide to file a court case against the priest despite the obstacles in their way. In their pursuit of justice, they cross paths with sign language interpreter Maya, who has also witnessed powerful people manipulate the results of cases. In a society where few choose to listen, how can they win against forces that silence those who cannot speak and break the souls of those who can?

The Hearing is a standout and strong contender for Best Picture for me at Cinemalaya 2024. It is a detailed character study, authentic storytelling and insightful cinematography.
Enzo Esorio will definitely bag the Best Actor comes the award night as he effectively acts with his eyes and nuances. Mylene Dizon will make you cry as she effectively embodies her character and adds depth to the film's powerful message. Nor Domingo, Ruby Ruiz andIna Feleo performances are noteworthy and embrace their characters whole heartedly. The cinematography of the film is a masterclass in storytelling. Its camerawork focuses on three points of view: what the main characters sees, what the audience sees, and what we see as if we are the recipient of the characters' journey. Even the sound, music and production design are effective as it adds to the film's emotional impact and quality. The movie is affecting and the message is easily conveyed to the audience. This film is highly recommended and must be seen at Cinemalaya 2024.

My Verdict:  5/5
