Set during the Filipino-American war, the film tells the story of the revolution as it marches on against the Americans after the death of Gen. Antonio Luna. The conflicted philosophies behind the heroic struggles continue and become personified in the colorful character of Gen. Gregorio "Goyo" del Pilar, one of the youngest generals of the Philippine Revolution. Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral is a coming-of-age story of one of the most revered Filipino heroes of the late 19th century.
Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral stirred a great sense of national pride to me after watching. It
made me more curious on the story of our national heroes as well as the film is a
good recall of our history for us to be reminded on what our national
heroes sacrificed for our freedom.
The film manages to tackle
many of the Philippines enduring societal ills using meticulous
character development. Paulo Avelino, equipped with the excellent script
by Tarog and writer Rody Vera, makes this work perfectly, because he
fits to his character so well. As Goyo, Avelino is everything his
director cracked him up to be as an actor who could convey internal
struggles and give life to an interesting person in our history
Though
the story is top billed by Gregorio del Pilar, the film is an ensemble
piece with excellent portrayals by Mon Confiado (as Emilio Aguinaldo)
which his presence are always felt and Epy Quizon (as Apolinario Mabini)
which his nuance strikes to the audience. Other notable performance is
from Art Acuña, Carlo Aquino, Aaron Villaflor, and Benjamin Alves that
make the full impact of the story more engaging and profound.
Goyo
has its own dynamic as compare to Heneral Luna. I like more Goyo in
terms of its cinematic approach and aesthetic in storytelling that adds
more arc to the character of Gregorio Del Pilar. If Heneral Luna is
more dark and campy, Goyo on the other hand is more subtle and profound
though, both of the film leaves mark to us that we as Filipino be
forever grateful to our history. Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral is truly a
cinematic gem as it boast its aesthetic brilliance with its incredible
cinematography, close to detail production design, creative storytelling
and powerful musical score that sets the mood of each scene. I can say
that this is one of the film that we can be proud of in terms of
production value and essence of story.
My Verdict: 5/5
