Hospicio Offers Psycho-Comic Drama

Story-sharing is a good form of therapy. It started around a bonfire inside a cave in ancient time. Humankind sustain its civilization by chanting, dancing, drawing on cave walls, and storytelling. This is a way of relating to others as equal. In a controlled environment like a hospicio the informal, unstructured disclosing of experiences to one another is privileging the life history of each client. Social workers, house parents supervise abused kids, women, and drugs/substance abusers, for an institutionalized care. In attending to their bio-psychosocial needs, the approach is centered on the family. The environment is important in the healing process.

Powered by celebrities and veterans as cast, Bonifacio’s HOSPICIO offers existentialist concept of the body, gender, and self. The body is the battleground. It is tied with power both secular and divine. How can the body be shown, whose body should ben shown, are gendered or politically-motivated questions. Leslie (Loisa Andalio) with her younger sister Lian (Miel Espinosa) was caught in the middle of a drug-bust. Her parents in panic entered her in Hospicio Nueva Vida managed by Imang Lara (Ana Abad Santos) assisted by Richard (Kurt Kendrick). Leslie met other clients like lesbian Archie (MM Gigante), sex-obsessed Mariz (Elle Ramirez), catatonic Karla (Mary Joy Apostol). 

Also as regulars in Hospicio are former fashion designer Mamang Franko (Manny Castaneda), Husband and wife team former boxer Imong Miguel (Francis Mata) and frustrated diva Imang Aurora Valerio (Aurora Yumul). These ten characters defy rehabilitation. The tragic tattoes their bodies, the comic calms their psyche. For them to overcome their infirmities Hospicio offers psycho- comic therapy. In so doing, Hospicio’s unique systems foreshadows the surprise of who are healed and who are not.

The Cinema One Festival schedule is on October 12 to 21 in Gateway, Glorietta, Trinoma, and Powerplant Mall-Rockwell.
