Movie Review: UnMarry

UnMarry is a touching drama that explores the painful journey of annulment, family dynamics, and the meaning of “happily ever after.” Inspired by real-life cases and their impact on children, the film follows Celine (Angelica Panganiban) as she seeks an annulment while fighting for custody of her daughters, and Ivan (Zanjoe Marudo), who is desperate to save his marriage and connect with his son. Their paths cross at a family lawyer’s office, hearts tangle, emotions run deep, and somewhere between heartbreak and coffee, healing begins.

What makes UnMarry stand out is its solid and sincere performances from Angelica Panganiban and Zanjoe Marudo. The film presents an affecting love story in the middle of annulment while delivering a decently made courtroom drama, grounded in honest, heartfelt emotion. It tackles annulment without being preachy, showing the emotional reality of couples going through separation and the impact on children in a sensitive, authentic way. It’s essentially an anatomy of separation, yet it’s entertaining, informative, and carries meaningful moral lessons.

Angelica Panganiban delivers a powerhouse performance as a wife who becomes the victim of a manipulative spouse. Her portrayal is emotionally grounded, capturing the pain and resilience of her character. Zanjoe Marudo shines as the underdog husband, earning your sympathy and rooting interest. Together, their chemistry feels natural and overflowing, giving substance to the story. Angelica is undoubtedly a strong contender for Best Actress at the MMFF 2025 Awards Night.

Eugene Domingo brings her signature charm as a vlogger-lawyer, stealing scenes with humor and wit. Tom Rodriguez is effective as the manipulative ex-husband, evoking real anger and frustration from the audience. It’s refreshing to see Solenn Heussaff back on the big screen; her presence is captivating, and her sincerity in her performance adds another layer of nuance.

Beyond the drama and courtroom tension, UnMarry offers important realizations about the process of separation. At its core, it reminds viewers that self-worth, personal growth, and making decisions that benefit the greater good matter most. This is a thoughtful, relatable, and emotionally resonant relationship film that provides a close look at annulment in the Philippines while balancing heartfelt emotion with entertainment.

My Verdict: 4/5
