Movie Review: Rekonek

Rekonek is a warm, meaningful Christmas film that beautifully explores love, family, and forgiveness in a modern world suddenly cut off from digital communication. Set ten days before Christmas, the film follows six different Filipino families who are forced to reconnect with each other face-to-face during a global internet outage on Christmas Eve. As the world goes offline, Rekonek reminds us of the importance of personal connections, empathy, and truly spending time with our loved ones.

It has been a while since we’ve seen a Filipino ensemble film that is light, feel-good, and heartwarming. Rekonek is a refreshing addition to the Metro Manila Film Festival, bringing back memories of classics like Puso ng Pasko and Hiling from the ’90s. Among the ensemble, the Legaspi family storyline stands out, resonating onscreen with authentic family bonding. Cassy Legaspi delivers a standout performance, showing depth and maturity that anchors her scenes. Andrea Brillantes shines with her comedic timing, showcasing her versatility and charm, while Alexa Miro adds humor and energy, bringing laughs throughout her scenes. Of course, Gloria Diaz brings her timeless presence and memorable performance, elevating every moment she’s on screen. Bela Padilla, Gerald Anderson, Charlie Dizon, and Carmina Villarroel also contribute strong performances, each having their own memorable moments.

The film succeeds in delivering its moral lessons without being preachy. It emphasizes the value of family, self-worth, kindness, and the irreplaceable power of face-to-face connections in a world increasingly dominated by online interactions. Rekonek captures the essence of a traditional Filipino Christmas, making audiences feel the warmth, love, and joy of the holiday season.

If you’re looking for a film to watch with your family this MMFF — to relax, smile, and feel the true spirit of Christmas — Rekonek comes highly recommended.

My Verdict: 3.5/5
