Movie Review: Still Human

A paralyzed and hopeless divorcé, Cheong-wing (Anthony Wong) is in need of a caretaker. He meets his new live-in Filipino domestic helper, Evelyn (Crisel Consunji), who has put her dream on hold to come to Hong Kong to earn a living. Living under the same roof, these two strangers develop an unlikely relationship. As they get to learn more about each other, they also rediscover themselves – Cheong- wing begins to reconnect with his estranged son; Evelyn reignites her dream of being a photographer. Together, they help each other through ups and downs, twists and turns, love and loss and experience the different seasons of life. Just when they think they have lost all hope, little do they know, life still has a lot to offer.

I'm lucky to catch the Philippine premiere of this touching and heartwarming film Still Human. This OFW film is not your typical melodrama film that will highlight the drama of an OFW but it will show you the positive side of working overseas. It will give you hope in life that even if you are away home you can still find a second home abroad. The dynamics of the relationship between the two characters Evelyn and Cheong-wing is lovely. Their bittersweet relationship is something that is rare to find in an employer-employee relationship.  The chemistry between the two leads are overflowing that serves as the main anchor of the film to deliver a film that will give you hope and make you cry. Oliver Siu Kuen Chan makes her feature debut with this vividly characterized domestic drama that are carefully crafted and understated. Still Human is a surprisingly satisfying export film that is full of Filipino touch. I really hope that Still Human could have its commercial release in the Philippines as it deserves to come home and should be seen by many  Filipinos

My Verdict: 5/5
