Movie Review: Pandanggo Sa Hukay
A small-town midwife’s preparation for a job interview is disrupted by series of unfortunate turn of events. Elena, a midwife and breadwinner, aims for better future for her family. On the eve of her application process and interview for a job in Saudi Arabia, Elena finds herself in an unfamiliar territory and dances her way out - the pandanggo way. Pandanggo sa Hukay is about a woman’s journey in balancing light and shadows in her life.
Pandanggo sa Hukay gave Iza Calzado her best performance to date showing her human and grounded side as we mostly see her on a genre film or offbeat role but this time, she opens up her heart in her performance. The film is not exactly what your think it is.. It has an interesting screenplay showing how far people can go just to survive. The first act works with the good chemistry of three midwife Iza Calzado, Diva Montelaba and the scene stealer Star Orjaliza. I just have a hard time grasping on the second act but nevertheless the message of film about hardships and sacrifices of a woman came across to me.
My Verdict: 3/5
