When his grandfather falls ill, an orphaned boy and his malfunctioning robot embark on a quest to look for magical grains that he believes can save the old man’s life. Set in the year 2050 at the State of Bicol, Philippines, Mithi, an orphaned boy, moves to a farm to live with his estranged grandfather, Mauricio. When the old man falls ill, and as the crops in their farm seem to fall ill with him, the boy embarks on a quest with his malfunctioning robot to search for magical grains that he believes can save the man’s life.
ANI (The Harvest) boast of its technical achievement with its awesome visual effects that proves that Philippine Cinema can achieve what Hollywood film can do in terms of CGI. It's charming story bounded with hope, family ties and perseverance give touches of Filipino culture in the film. Though challenge with its story telling and phasing, the premise was promising. It gives us a different flavor of pinoy sci-fi film that we don't usually see on the big screen. The production design and cinematography bring us to a different world that we did not expect that is possible to see in a Filipino film. I admire the film’s ambition and fresh concept. There are commendable performance by the actors from the young kid Zyren dela Cruz, Ricky Davao up to Marc Felix, and Anna Luna. The real person who acted as a robot Miguel Valdes also does a goob in this film. ANi is one of the finest works of CGI and VFX which the most impressive ones I've seen in Filipino films.
My Verdict: 3/5
