M. Butterfly Theater Review

M. BUTTERFLY is a play by David Henry Hwang loosely based on the relationship between French diplomat Bernard Boursicot and Shi Pei Pu, a Peking opera singer. René Gallimard is a member of the French embassy in China. René is mild mannered and considers himself to be poor with women. He meets and falls in love with Chinese opera star Song Liling, a woman whom he considers to be the embodiment of the perfect woman, Madame Butterfly. But when West meets East… Everything is not what it seems….

Loved the production value and the compelling performance by the cast lead by RS Francisco and Olivier Borten. The supporting cast led by Pinky Amador, Rebecca Chuaunsu and Lee O' Brian shine on their respective roles. RS Francisco does a nice job and owns his character effectively as Madame Butterfly. The action of the play is built on a series of opposites – western and eastern, man and woman, life and art, experience and innocence. It's script is intent on showing how easily these binaries attract and repel and blur together. Overall M. Butterfly is a is a stunning piece of classic dramatic theater with layered love story that covers themes like men versuss women and fantasy love versus reality that has elements of spectacle and sprinklings  comedy.

M. Butterfly Manila runs from September 13-30 2018 at the Globe Auditorium, Maybank Performing Arts Theater BGC, Taguig. Tickets available at ticket world.com.ph/mbutterfly
