Movie Review: Kun Maupay Man It Panahon

It was November of 2013. The super-typhoon Yolanda and the massive storm surge it triggered had just ravaged the city of Tacloban and left it in absolute state of mass destruction. When the worst had settled down, Miguel (Daniel Padilla) soon got reunited with his girlfriend Andrea (Rans Rifol), and later his mother Norma (Charo Santos). The three planned to catch a coming ship which will take them to Manila before a rumored next typhoon will hit.

First of all I'm happy that we have this artistic film to be included in a festival that used to cater to an audience pleaser film. The subject matter is very relatable and close to our heart. It will definitely please your heart and identify yourself in each of the three main characters. It's not the typical melodramatic climate film as it leads us to the journey of finding one self for the three leads. The core subjects that we follow in this film are well integrated and weaved to each other from the victims of typhoons, authorities that handle the typhoon aftermath and the story line of Norma, Miguel & Andrea. The magic realism style in the screenplay is effectively utilized to add layers to the film. Charo Santos bares it all whole heartedly with soul and even with no lines she tells a lot of message. Daniel Padilla likewise delivers on his most sensible performance to date. He got me affected especially by the ending of the film. Rans Rifol is a revelation and confidently justified her character. She might bag the best supporting actress come award night. The production design and cinematography are a visual feast in which you will feel the coldness and aftermath of a typhoon. The musical scoring is solid, it has its own story and style that suits the mood of the film. Kun Maupay Man It Panahon might be bizarre in the way it tells the story but stands out with the heart and message of the film.

My Verdict: 5/5
