My Verdict for Metro Manila Film Festival 2021

Movie Review: The Exorsis

Gina (Toni Gonzaga) and Dani (Alex Gonzaga) are sisters with very much different personalities. Gina is a formal, goal-oriented person, while Dani is more of a free spirit, living life on a day-to-day basis. Being orphans, it has been Gina’s responsibility as the eldest to take care of their family, and her grocery business has been able to provide for her and her sister’s needs. Fate makes a way for Gina’s unfulfilled dreams to come true when an opportunity abroad comes knocking on her door, but she becomes hesitant to grab this chance in fear that Dani, her reckless and irresponsible sister, will not be able to manage her growing grocery business.

One eerie night, a mysterious girl named Leng-Leng passes by and unfortunately falls into an accident right in front of Gina’s grocery store and dies. Her spirit wanders, finds Dani, and takes over her body. Now possessed by Leng-Leng, Dani tries to attack everyone she meets, including her sister. Dani’s condition worsens, and Gina finds a way to help and protect her sister.

Movie Review: Love at First Stream

Love at First Stream revolves around the new normal, where life is wildly digital. They are the Stream Team: the unstoppable dreamer Vilma (Daniela), the loyal lover boy Tupe (Anthony), the sweet girl-next-door Megumi (Kaori) and the bad boy heartthrob with a heart of gold Gino (Jeremiah). The film showcases these young characters and how they experience romantic relationships, family and fight for their ambitions and dreams.

Movie Review: Nelia

Nelia is about a nurse who tries to uncover the mystery behind the deaths of patients in Room 009 and also discusses the issue of mental health among others.

Movie Review: Huwag Kang Lalabas

Huwag Kang Lalabas is a trilogy film that tells three stories of haunting secrets, folklore, and urban legends. The first episode, Kumbento,  stars Beauty Gonzales where she plays a novitiate who reluctantly uncovers something that has long been kept secret within the walls of the convent. The second episode, Bahay, lead by Aiko Melendez and Joaquin Domagoso, is based on a familiar urban legend with mysterious deaths happening in their rural community. The third episode, Hotel, stars Kim Chui, which is about an overseas Filipino worker who returns home and, for lack of a better choice, goes into quarantine in a run down and insect-infested hotel.

Movie Review: Kun Maupay Man It Panahon

It was November of 2013. The super-typhoon Yolanda and the massive storm surge it triggered had just ravaged the city of Tacloban and left it in absolute state of mass destruction. When the worst had settled down, Miguel (Daniel Padilla) soon got reunited with his girlfriend Andrea (Rans Rifol), and later his mother Norma (Charo Santos). The three planned to catch a coming ship which will take them to Manila before a rumored next typhoon will hit.

Movie Review: A Hard Day

Detective Edmund Villon (Dingdong Dantes) is having a hard day and the following events happen to him in less than 24 hours: His mother passed away. He and his coworkers are investigated by police inspectors over alleged embezzlement. Then on his way to his mother’s funeral, he drives recklessly and commits a fatal hit and run. He tries to cover-up the accident by hiding the man’s corpse in his deceased mother’s coffin. After the burial, Lt. Ace “Alas” Franco (John Arcilla) out of nowhere, starts giving Villon threats and warnings. He is about to expose Villon’s crime if he does not get what he wants from him – the corpse of the man that Villon hit.

Movie Review: Big Night!

Big Night!, tells the story of a gay beautician named Dharna, played by Christian Bables, who is caught up in the war against drugs in the present-day Philippines. Mistakenly placed on the current drug users’ watchlist or “Oplan Tokhang,” Dharna struggles to go to great lengths in order to clear his name.

Movie Review: Huling Ulan Sa Tag-Araw

A seminarian looking for a sign, an entertainer longing for more time.  Their life takes a sudden turn when fate lead them to an unexpected romance.

His parents call him “God’s Promise”.  Growing up, everyone envisioned LUIS (Ken Chan) to become a priest.  He was made to believe that he was meant to follow a path of Holy life.  But on his final years, Luis was given a regency and had leave the seminary to reflect on his future.

Luis was looking for a sign from God when he met a bar performer, the fierce and beautiful LUISA (Rita Daniela).  Thinking that Luisa could be that sign he was asking for, he “hires” Luisa and takes her to his family’s house in Pagsanjan.  Meanwhile, Luisa needs the extra money to beat her personal deadline.

As their two different worlds intertwine, they soon find themselves falling hard for one other, but only to realize that fate is, yet again, taking them to a different course.
