Independent cinema takes center stage once again as the Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival returns this August with another exciting lineup of films—and this year's edition features some of the country's biggest stars leading powerful and thought-provoking stories.
Among the highly anticipated entries is "Mag-Iina," starring Janine Gutierrez. The actress shared that audiences should expect a different kind of horror experience, describing the film as a unique horror-thriller that goes beyond the usual scares.
Meanwhile, Ruru Madrid and Iza Calzado headline "Hand of God," a film that was shot on location in Basilan. Ruru spoke highly of his experience filming in the province, saying the production allowed him to appreciate its beauty, culture, and the warmth of the people while bringing authenticity to the story.
Also competing this year is "2 VALID IDs," starring Pokwang and Zaijian Jaranilla. The social commentary drama tackles timely realities faced by many Filipinos, promising a moving and socially relevant narrative.
Completing the star-studded lineup is the queer romance "Tayo Lang ang Nakakaalam," led by Jeffrey Quizon, Yayo Aguila, Martin del Rosario and Miguel Odron, which explores love, identity, and relationships through an intimate and emotional lens.

Cinemalaya 22 will once again be held primarily at Red Carpet Cinemas, Shangri-La Plaza, with Ayala Malls Cinemas continuing its long-standing partnership as a festival venue. Gateway Cineplex also returns this year, giving even more moviegoers the opportunity to experience the best of contemporary Philippine independent cinema.
Running alongside the festival is the 38th Gawad CCP Para sa Alternatibong Pelikula at Video, Southeast Asia's longest-running independent film competition, which continues to celebrate alternative filmmaking through narrative, documentary, experimental, and animation categories.
Since its establishment in 2005, Cinemalaya has supported the production and exhibition of more than a thousand Filipino independent works, many of which have earned recognition in prestigious local and international film festivals. More than just a celebration of cinema, the festival remains a platform for bold, authentic, and meaningful storytelling that continues to shape Philippine filmmaking.
As Cinemalaya 22: Reel Reflections unfolds this August, audiences are invited not only to watch these films but also to see themselves in the stories they tell—discovering reflections of family, identity, resilience, love, and the many experiences that define what it means to be Filipino.
